A risk assessment is an important step in protecting your workers, and your business, as well as complying with the law. Employers must risk assess work activities as part of the process to ensure people’s health and safety is not put at risk. The risk assessment will identify straight forward practical steps that can be taken to protect people from harm and suffering. 

The law does not expect you to eliminate all risk, but you are required to protect people as far as ‘reasonably practicable’.

What is a Risk Assessment?

Risk assessment is a fundamental principal of health and safety management.  A risk assessment identifies hazards and assesses whether reasonable precautions have been taken to ensure no-one suffers harm as a result of those hazards.

Accidents and ill health can ruin lives and affect your business, e.g. through increased insurance costs, lost reputation, or if you have to go to court.

What are the legal requirements?

As an employer, you must carry out “suitable and sufficient” health and safety risk assessments as part of your duties under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
 
Sensible health and safety measures then must be put in place to manage these health and safety risks.

These risk assessments must then be reviewed periodically and whenever significant changes are made which could affect the assessment, e.g. after building alterations, or a change in the work activity/process.
